Introduction: What is the Knowledge of the Unseen (Ghayb)?
Knowing the future is one of the greatest mysteries that humanity has always been curious about. According to Islamic belief, particularly the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt (a), the absolute knowledge of the unseen (ghayb) belongs solely to Allah. It is impossible for humans and other creations to know the future independently.
The Unseen and the Future in the Holy Quran
Almighty Allah states in the Holy Quran: "And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him." (Surah Al-An'am, 59). This verse clearly demonstrates that the absolute knowledge of the future and everything hidden belongs only to Allah. No human being possesses the power to know what will happen in the future on their own.
The Prophets and Imams Knowing the Future
How, then, did the Prophet (s) and the Ahl al-Bayt (a) foretell future events? The Quran answers this question: "[He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His unseen to anyone except whom He has approved of messengers..." (Surah Al-Jinn, 26-27). Therefore, the knowledge of the Infallibles regarding the future is not independent; rather, it is limited to what Allah has revealed to them through revelation, inspiration, and divine teaching.
The Knowledge of the Unseen in Ahl al-Bayt (a) Hadiths
It is narrated in authentic hadiths that when Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a) was asked about this, he said: "When the Imam wishes to know something, Allah informs him." This hadith shows that the knowledge of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) is tied to the will of Allah. They never claimed to possess independent knowledge of the unseen without Allah's permission.
The Doctrine of Bada: The Alteration of the Future
According to the doctrine of "Bada", which holds an important place in Shia theology, the future is not entirely unalterable. Human prayers, giving charity, and maintaining family ties (silat al-rahm) can change destiny. Regarding this, the Imams have stated that Allah may decree certain events to happen, but alters that future due to the righteous deeds of people. Therefore, only Allah knows the absolute and unchangeable future.
Conclusion
According to Islam, knowing the future independently belongs solely to Allah. The Prophet (s) and the Ahl al-Bayt (a) can only be aware of the future to the extent that Allah reveals to them. Attempting to learn the future through fortune-telling, horoscopes, and other superstitious means is strictly rejected by Islam.
