What is Ilm al-Ladunni?
One of the most intriguing concepts in Islamic mysticism and exegesis is "ilm al-ladunni" (inspired or divine knowledge). This term refers to extraordinary and esoteric knowledge bestowed directly by Allah Almighty upon certain special servants, without any human intermediary, education, or experience.
Ilm al-Ladunni in the Holy Quran
The origin of this knowledge is rooted in verse 65 of Surah Al-Kahf in the Holy Quran. Narrating the story of Prophet Moses (a) and Prophet Khidr (a), the verse states:
"...and whom We had taught knowledge from Our presence."
The phrase "min ladunna" (from Our presence) in the verse proves that this knowledge has a direct divine source and is far removed from human learning methods.
Ilm al-Ladunni in Ahl al-Bayt (a) Sources
According to authentic Shia sources and the narrations of the Imams, the most perfect manifestation of ilm al-ladunni belongs to the Holy Prophet (s) and his pure Ahl al-Bayt (a). The Imams (a) possessed this sublime knowledge without attending any school or learning from a human teacher.
Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a) states:
"Our knowledge pertains to the past, the future, and what is in the hearts. This is a grace bestowed upon us by Allah."
Through this knowledge, the infallible Imams were aware of the esoteric realities of existence and guided humanity to the right path.
Main Characteristics of Ilm al-Ladunni
- Its Bestowed Nature (Wahbi): This knowledge is not acquired through effort, but is granted solely by Allah's grace and choice.
- Infallibility: Since it originates from a divine source, there is no error or doubt in this knowledge.
- Esoteric Realities: Unlike exoteric sciences, it encompasses the unseen aspects and secrets of events.
